LITERATURE |
Ever wondered which is the first literature book to be published in English in Africa. The book is called the palm wine drinkard. The author was from West Africa, specifically Nigeria and was called Amos Tutuola. Faber and Faber limited from Britain published it in 1952. The story borrows a lot from the Yoruba culture. Critiques who by then were the English referred to the story as devilish, grotesque, quaint and exotic. Amos Tutuola was a school dropout and this is evident in his grammar. That explains the spelling of the word drunkard in the title, which is spelled drinkard. The text has been rendered in broken English, but ironically he was referred to as a genius in story telling. The book was published with the aim of proving that Africans are incapable of learning to talk and write English correctly. That is why the publishers did not making any corrections to the book. The book is no longer in publication but it is worth reading it. There are very few copies found in Kenya. The book in about the challenges a palm wine drunkard faces in his journey in search of his tapster. His best tapster had died and now lived in the land of the dead. So he decided to go to the land of the dead to get him back. The story is about his experiences. |

CONTROVACIAL DA VINCI CODE |
A book and film that is believed to be based on actual facts. Christ’s closest companion was not Jesus but rather it was marry Magdalene. Yes the prostitute that he rescued. This information is of vital importance to women, who have for a long time been sidelined as religious leaders. The fact that a woman had such power is simply unacceptable to past and present religious leaders. It is believed that there are gospels written by her but are not part of the bible. In a nutshell the story is about the Catholic Church through opus dei trying to get hold of a “holy grail” which is believed to be holding such secrets. Such information threatens the loyalty of the masses to the Catholic Church, and this is an important source of power for the Catholic Church. There is a cult that is believed to have consisted of great men like Alexander the great, Leonardo da Vinci himself, who tried to tell of these secrets in his painting. The cult was formed to protect these secrets. And the interesting part is that if the facts are really true, than there are descendants of Jesus. The movie is worth watching, but reading the book itself is even better, it’s more detailed. While reading it keep in mind it is based on actual facts. SO WHY IS IT NOT BANNED? If they ban it then people will question if there is some truth in it that that Catholics are trying to protect. |

IT'S HARD |
Alone in the room It’s quite It’s dark That’s when it all happens she says
She tries to forget it She tries to push it From her mind It’s hard, she says
Her heart is heavy Her heart is sad She tries to think of good To smile, she says
Her past is back It’s always coming back Every time the room is dark The past haunts, she says
She tries to sleep She closes her eyes Her painful past Is so vivid, she says
The sadness is too much The regret is too heavy The pain is unbearable It’s hard, she says
Yet she knows She has to continue living |

SUICIDE |
It’s the easiest way of solving a problem. Troubles just disappear. There is no feeling of pain afterwards, no hurtful or painful memories. There is no anxiety or regret for the person after death. Death is peaceful serene. There is no existence, no feeling, and no expectations. What more could a person full of pain and regret wish for. What if one is tired of it all? What if one is tired of night and day? WHY Because during the day, one has to pretend that everything is ok. One has to pretend to be living to be happy. Then the nights come the sleepless nights, where the mind tortures one with painful memories, and the heart becomes heavy with regret. BUT WAIT Isn’t suicide, a lazy mans way of solving a problem. a cheap excuse. A selfish act |

CORRUPTION |
Some may argue that literature does not have anything to do with politics. How wrong they are literature has everything to do not only with politics but with everything else. Literature is a library of all subjects. Therefore being a lover of literature I feel compelled to talk about politics focusing on corruption and the fight against it. I believe there is no country that can rightfully say that corruption does not exist in there systems. What differs is the degree of it, and Kenya is very high on it. Political leaders claim to be leading the fight against corruption but I believe this is just lip service. The same politicians who made corruption so rampant, all over sudden want to fight it! Committees and organizations have been formed to fight corruption, but surely what progress has been made so far, or are they formed to just confuse the common man. The government is looking at the small dot in the big white wall and they are pretending not to notice the wall in general How do you tell an underpaid man not to receive a bribe! How do you tell a man who has been looking for a job for years not to bribe to get a job when an opportunity presents itself! How do you tell a poor man with wives and children, or a widow with children not to accept money from politicians during campaigns! A starved man will do anything to get food. If the government is really serious in fighting corruption let it provide the basic needs to its citizens, at least the current goverment is taking initiative. |
