Feminism is a concept embraced by all women. The theory was developed to fight for the rights of the oppressed (the women). The right to be given an equal chance in society.
Feminism is basically a theory that advocates for equality among women and men. It is a fight for a gender sensitive society. The patriarchal society initially was so strong that it even affected the language of communication. Thus the fight for equality has also to include the type of language used. Take examples of words like;
Human
Female
Woman
She
All these words have the male connotation in them. This means that this fight has to begin from the most basic level. The women are described as a function of the male, and for a while women were comfortable using the male as a base to define themselves. Of course now it is said that women have created their own dictionary with words that do not define them through the male. The wheels of change are turning.
For life to be a balanced some sociologists say there has to be two extremes. There has to be the oppressor and the oppressed. There can never be an equal society. That is how society is structured. Such structures have exited since the beginning of life. The two basic classes that have always existed is that of the man and the woman, and the woman has always been the inferior class, the undermined the oppressed. Their views have never been sought for. The patriarchal societies believed that women play a minor role in the development of society. Women were silenced.
The women folk have the same ability, as the men, to do practically anything on the surface of this earth. They should not settle for less.
This is not the time for righteousness on the part of the woman folk. They have been oppressed for so long by the patriarchal society, that there is no room for them to feel sorry or to be sympathetic for themselves. That is the only way justice can be achieved. The male class has dominated the patriarchal society for so long. The society is not a constant factor, what is there today can easily change to be history tomorrow. Thus the women should use themselves to be the wheels of change, and create a situation of reversed roles. It should be noted that just like everything in life this change would take time. |
